The Story Behind the Story
It started with a bedtime story—or, more precisely, the first night without one.
I had read to my son every single night since he was born. Then, on his first night after starting high school, he told me he no longer wanted me to read to him.
It caught me completely off guard.
Talking about it with my wife, we realised how precious those little routines are. You do them every day, never quite knowing when the last time will be.
Not long afterwards, I was visiting my nephew while he watched cartoons. It took me back to growing up in the eighties: waking up excited for the next adventure, then heading to school where we would laugh, talk about our favourite heroes and act out their stories.
What stayed with me was more than the excitement. Those heroes were brave. They stood by their friends. And when things got difficult, they worked together.
I wanted to bring that feeling to a new generation—and create stories that parents and children could enjoy together.
The inspiration for my own little hero was already at home: our much-loved spaniel, Baxter.
With him as my starting point, Super Spaniel Samurai began to take shape. A world of friendship, teamwork and courage, with plenty of laughter along the way.
My hope is that these adventures become part of another family’s bedtime routine. Something to look forward to, talk about and remember.
Because those moments together matter.
